I love knitting shawls. Shawls can be ethereal or comfortably warm. They can be simple or intricate. They can be small, worn like a scarf, or they can be large, covering our cold torsos like a blanket. They can be made in wool, silk, bamboo, cotton, acrylic, recycled t-shirts, ribbon, whatever you want. I really enjoy the fact that I can kick out a shawl in a week or so (knitting only a few hours a day) and I end up with a gorgeous, giftable, fashionable piece of clothing. My knitting pattern folder on my computer is filled with patterns upon patterns of shawls. I have a whole flash drive devoted to knitting patterns, and 1/2 of it is shawl patterns. Sifting through all of those favorited patterns, I think I will create a list of the next 5 shawls I want to knit. Let me ruminate and I will share the list tomorrow…

So it seems that the world is being inundated with baby girls. My cousin just gave birth to a baby girl, my sister is due to deliver a girl in a couple of months, and 3 out of the last 4 friends that have given birth have been drowning in pink. Ugh. I am a mother of boys. Girls are so, well, alien to me. So what does this have to do with my knitting? Well, I have been knitting tons of stuff for these babes, and I have figured out I am good at knitting dresses! Yes, dresses. Freestyle knitting. I actually have my own pattern for baby girl dresses! Wow. Who would have ever thought? Stay tuned for the actual pattern. I will be posting it in the next week or so!

I was Ravelry surfing and a lot of my Rav friends were posting pictures of themselves knitting in public on WWKIP Day. Um, I knit in public everyday. Kind of a humdrum holiday, if you ask me. I knit in the car, I knit at sporting events, I knit at school, I knit at bible study, I knit at the hospital, heck, I even knit on the subway. I was waiting in the doctor’s office with my son, and I heard an old lady say to her granddaughters, who were adults, that she didn’t know that anyone knit anything anymore. Then a small boy asked me what I was doing. His overtired mama, who was struggling with her sick baby, looked mortified that he was bothering me. He sat and talked to me about knitting for a good 10 minutes. I think she was amazed he was quiet for that long talking about those “little swords and string” (his words) with a total stranger. And relieved. I love to knit in public…people always comment about how interesting or how odd it is. My favorite is when a thugged out homeboy approaches me on the subway to ask me about my knitting and is actually interested. Ah, yes, World Wide Knit In Public Day is everyday in my calendar. I think we should all celebrate it!
